The 5 favorite fall recipes and their stories
1. Corn Pudding by Melissa Brown
This recipe has been a Thanksgiving staple in my family for years. The smell of this baking in my oven transports me miles away and years back in time. I grew up in the Midwest on a farm and moved east to New Jersey after medical school to complete my pediatric residency. I’ve lived in NJ ever since then.
This recipe will always remind me of my country roots. I love fall foods–they’re all comforting and remind me of a warm hug–apple crisp, pumpkin cookies, big pots of steaming chicken soup, and creamy corn pudding. Nowadays, I try to eat healthy, and having this creamy corn pudding is not at the top of anyone’s list of healthy foods.
I make an exception twice a year, though.
- I make corn pudding for every Thanksgiving as my contribution to the Thanksgiving table hosted by my sister-in-law.
- And I made it also for our family’s holiday party in December.
You can take the girl out of the country but not the country out of the girl!

2. Quinoa Chili by Mariette Frey
This recipe for quinoa chili made it into Oxygen Magazine! It’s healthy, filling & gives you great energy. It’s a great fall/winter recipe.
I used to be a huge Oxygen Magazine fan, and I was on a trip to Paris. I was on a bus with a bunch of people, and we were passing around magazines, and I read it cover to cover. It was all about, like, working out, bodybuilding, and all that stuff. And, so I had turned in the recipe, and I remember when I was reading it, they didn’t tell me that they accepted it or anything. I was just reading it, and I turned the page, and I saw my low-fat quinoa chili. And I go, “Oh my gosh. They stole my recipe.”
And then I saw my name next to it. I’m constantly trying to find gluten and wheat-free recipes. Here’s my latest creation with my name on it. And I was like, oh my god. I’m famous. And it was it was, like, at, like, midnight. And so I couldn’t even tell anybody because I didn’t want to wake anybody up. That was, like, my funny story with that recipe. And it’s really good!
It made it into Oxygen Magazine and is really good!

3. The Streets of New York Mocktail by Jennifer Burke
I long ago (25+ years ago) worked in New York City and remember the sights and smells (the good ones!) of the city. Plus I’ve visited relatives in parts of the Northeast and New England in the fall when it’s apple picking and cider season.
About 5 or 6 years ago at Thanksgiving, I wanted to make a variation on those themes and flavors, the memory of a cocktail from the past so I started simmering this simple syrup – adding in fall flavors and ingredients. I made a variation of a bourbon Old Fashioned with it. All my family loved it so much that we found ways to use the syrup in mocktails, spiked cider, and more.
In the Northeast, I had apple-themed, fall-spiced drinks and loved them.

5. Pumpkin Pie by Christiane Schroeter
Well, when I was thinking about my favorite fall recipe, I immediately thought about our beloved pumpkin pie recipe. It all started as a simple Thanksgiving tradition, a classic dessert that signified the arrival of fall.
Our journey with this pie took an unexpected turn when we faced some food allergies within the family, necessitating a transition to a gluten-free version. Little did we know that this adaptation would make it even more cherished. As we ventured into the world of gluten-free baking, this pie became the star of our holiday table, and everyone looked forward to that first heavenly bite.
You know it's a good fall day when the house smells like warm spices and pumpkin.

What truly warms my heart is how this pumpkin pie has become a year-round delight. My children adore it so much that we find ourselves whipping up a pie just because. It’s not only about the taste; it’s about the joy of creating something together in the kitchen, the laughter, and the sweet moments we share.
The best part? The aroma fills our home as the pie bakes, wrapping us in a cozy blanket of memories and anticipation. The scent of warm spices and pumpkin wafting through the air is a reminder that every season can be a time for celebration, gratitude, and a delicious slice of pumpkin pie.
I want a piece of pie!
